Revitalization

In June 2005, a Revitalization Plan was approved for Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College. A community team had worked for several months developing a series of significant improvements. Although not formally part of the revitalization, the hiring of Mr. Michael Gaither as principal helped catalyze the changes for the school. These changes include implementation of AVID strategies schoolwide, school uniforms for the students, and a laser-like focus on academic achievement.

The Revitalization Plan calls specifically for the following changes:

• Transforming the school from a 6th-8th grade middle school into a 6th-12th grade early college over the course of four years. The student population will remain roughly the same; as the high school population builds to around 500 students, the middle school enrollment will reduce by the same amount.
• Taking advantage of the Post-Secondary Educational Opportunities Act for the high school students to attend college courses through the Community College of Aurora.
• Creating new academic programs to support a 6-12 early college model such as business internships, high school majors, accelerated schedules, and a vertically integrated curriculum.
