AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a school-wide initiative designed to influence the culture of the entire school. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students complete a college preparatory path in which they will succeed in the most rigorous curriculum, enter the mainstream activities of the school, increase their enrollment in a 2-4 year college, and become responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College is a nationally certified AVID school. Our school-wide AVID implementation encompasses both middle and high school. Rigorous AVID teaching strategies are utilized in every classroom, including a paradigm called WICR (pronounced “wicker”). WICR is writing to learn, emphasis on inquiry, a collaborative approach, and critical reading strategies. AVID at Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College is rooted in all aspects of the “MLK WAY,” which emphasizes High Expectations, No Excuses, and the Relentless Pursuit of Excellence.

Students who take AVID as an elective class work with their AVID elective teacher to develop the reading, writing, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills that are needed to thrive in high school and beyond. This class provides daily support in all content areas as well as setting a foundation for college and career readiness.

AVID supports students’ study and organizational skills so that they can be successful in honors and advanced classes. Not only do the students receive support from their teacher, but they will also have in class tutoring twice a week to support understanding and collaboration skills.

Between project based learning, monitoring grades and exploring college campuses, the AVID elective provides a unique opportunity for students to prepare for life after DMLK.
